2021 EMBODI Registration Open

KICKOFF: The Knoxville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc is inviting male youth, ages 11-18, to join our 2021 EMBODI program. The virtual kickoff is Sunday, February 28th, 2021, at 1 pm via Zoom. Our special guest speaker is Clarence Swearengen, educator, athletic director, and mentor. The EMBODI (Empowering Males to Build Opportunities for Developing Independence) program addresses STEM education, culture, self-efficacy, leadership, physical and mental health, healthy lifestyle choices, character, ethics, relationships, college readiness, fiscal management, civic engagement, and service-learning.

Hearts for Haiti

It’s the season of LOVE! Knoxville Alumnae’s International Awareness and Involvement Committee invites you to support its Hearts for Haiti campaign! Donate to help the children of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Elementary School’s The Cynthia M.A. Butler-McIntyre Campus in the remote village of Chἐrette, Haiti. The funds will help with teacher’s salaries, school lunches, and school building operational expenses. Donate now through February 28th, 2021.

HBCU Proud Week 1

It’s Black History Month, and what better way to celebrate this time of reflection than by showcasing our Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Every Monday, KAC will show you why we are “HBCU Proud!” and share facts about HBCUs!

The first HBCUs were founded in Pennsylvania and Ohio before the American Civil War to provide Black youths with an education at a time when Blacks were largely prevented from attending established colleges and universities. Today, there are 107 HBCUs with more than 228,000 students enrolled.

Member Spotlight: Happy Birthday Dr. Lula Powell!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: We celebrate the legacy of our dear past president, Dr. Lula Powell, as she turns 90 years young!

A retired educator, Dr. Powell was the longest-serving principal at Green Magnet Math and Science Academy. In 2015, Knoxville City Council voted to rename Town View Drive off Summit Hill Drive to “Lula Powell Drive.”
Her storied 42-year career in education as a teacher, librarian, and principal was also paired with her dedicated service to Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., where she served as president in 1963.

The Nu Zeta Chapter wants to bring awareness regarding the COVID-19 shot. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. – Nu Zeta Chapter is collaborating with Upsilon Chi Chapter of Chi Eta Phi, National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc. – Greater Knoxville Chapter, and the Knoxville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. to discuss the Facts and Misconceptions. A member of KAC who specializes in healthcare will serve as a panelist on the program as well.

A natural outgrowth and expansion for the continuation of the highly successful Dr. Betty Shabaaz Delta Academy: Catching the Dreams of Tomorrow, Delta GEMS (Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully) was created to catch the dreams of African American adolescent girls aged 14-18.

YWCA Phyllis Wheatley Center

BLESSINGS OVERFLOW: Members of the Knoxville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta joyfully donated more than $1,500 in gift cards to the YWCA Phyllis Wheatley Center in East Knoxville. A portion of the gift cards went directly to children who otherwise wouldn’t see a lot of gifts this Christmas and the other portion when to the center to help buy equipment and snacks. The Phyllis Wheatley Center’s After-School Enrichment Program (ASEP) provides a safe, nurturing environment with structure and accountability for middle-school students at no cost.
